Julia Oelkers works for various broadcasting stations and film production companies as a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker. Her work focusses on contemporary historical documentation and portraits. Since the pogrom-style attacks on migrants and asylum seekers in Germany at the beginning of the 1990s, racism, flight, and migration have been recurrent themes in her work. She is part of the out of focus media collective.
